Oyin Product Tricks!

From time to time, our customers ask about altering our goodies for their personal liking. Here are a few suggestions! Be sure to check back, we’ll add to the list soon!

Burnt Sugar Pomade

the fat crystals in some vegetable butters can crystallize under certain temperature conditions, and sometimes this happens over time with burnt sugar! the little crystals are not a sign of spoilage and the product is still completely safe to use, but we don’t always like to spend the extra time it takes to emulsify the little beads between our palms before use! luckily, there’s an easy way to get the crystals out, :o )

melt the pomade slowly (on LOW power or 20-30% power) until completely liquid/translucent, and then cool it quickly in the refrigerator. low power is important because you don’t want to burn the pomade, and to avoid melting the jar, it’s a good idea to remove the pomade from the jar and put into a different container. once the product is melted, stir it up and then pour back into the original jar and place it in your fridge to cool. smooth again!

Funk Butter
is your funk butter a bit too stiff? has it become dry over time’? please don’t put water in your funk butter – a moist product would rust the tin ;o) but a few drops of oil will do the trick!! you can use olive or coconut (already in the formula) or a few drops of afterbath. but any food-grade oil that you cook with in your kitchen will do! add a couple of drops at a time and stir with a chopstick or the back of a spoon. :o )

Juices
some people find the juices too rich for their hair – you can feel free to add spring water or filtered water to your bottle to dilute your bottle ‘to taste.’

Honey Wash
make sure to shake your honey wash vigorously before each use. if it begins to coagulate, move it to a warm area. coconut oil tends to solidify in cold spaces, but will melt to the touch of warm fingers.

Afterbath
oh no! is your afterbath solid? just sit it in a bowl of warm water, or leave it at room temperature.

often times, coconut oil tends to sink to the bottom of the bottle, as it is a dense oil. just shake vigorously, and it’s as good as new!

I’m so glad you posted that about the burnt sugar. I’ll have to try melting it should my pomade crystallize again.

It’s really important to use something like filtered water (I use distilled water) so that the juices don’t degrade. I discovered this trick a year ago and it works wonderfully, it’s thinner and works better with my girls’ hair and still smells wonderful.

Hello again :) I wanted to give an updated email of my experience of the products I have purchased. To began I loveeee the products I have bought. I have been searching for those permanent products I will use no matter what, I have found them. Granted I’ve only been natural a year and a half. But I noticed youtubers who found products they live by. Yes I too have been on the same journey to feed my hair what it needs to thrive. I purchased Burnt Sugar Pomade love it. I came home from the gym with wet hair as usual but needed to shower and leave back out for errands. So I rubbed the Pomade all thru my hair then put in fat two stranded twist, put my shower cap on etc. I ran a blow dryer over the cap to somewhat dry my hair since the weather is now cold here in Michigan. I then took apart the twist (still damp) and my hair looked as if I had a wet set or roller set. My daughter loved it. I received so many complements that day on my hair, and was asked who did it. I was proud to say I did my own hair with the help of Oyin Pomade. I also purchase and love the Juices & Berries. This product has come to for me. I have been wearing an old old two stranded twist out for 5 days now, due to my daughter being sick with her asthma acting up. So every I was able to spray my hair with a water, then spray with the juices & berries to put up in a curly fro. I was very happy with the end result. So thank you, because I have now found two permanent products for my hair. :)

My BC was on Dec. 30th 2010 & here’s some things I’ve lereand thus far:1. Moisture, moisture and oh yeah ..Moisture!2. Patience [Daniel-son in the words of Mr. Miyagi!] Everyone’s hair grows back at a different rate. Don’t compare your growth to another’s.2. Look & Listen to what your hair is telling you -I can always tell when a product doesn’t work well with my hair3. Love ALL of you including your hair -while it’s not what makes you, it is an extension of you and your personality. Love its kink and curls and express it to the world.4. Enjoy the journey that you and your hair are going on.
