summer time hair care 101
many women who rock their natural curls and kinks may agree that the summer months are the most care-free season in regards to hair care. after all, longer days and higher temperatures almost eliminate the need for the numerous hair tools that we use during the year to maintain and style our tresses. here are some tips for easy, almost care-free hair that you can rock from the boardroom to the beach
- when in doubt, just add water
ever wake up in the morning with your afro flat on one side? no need to load your tresses with tons of styling product and/or gel to style it. water is actually a great detangler on its own! hop in the shower and let the water handle any tangles and knots. then shake and let your coils form and fall naturally. for an added boost of deliciousness, spritz on your favorite leave-in like our go tea grooming spray for super hydrated curls.
- don’t fight the humidity!
embrace it and what it can do for your hair. highly textured kinks and coils thrive on water, water based products and the high level of precipitation in the air during the summer months. dreaming of a big, succulent afro or the perfect chunky twist-out? put away the anti-frizz creams and serums and let the humidity caress the your strands, encouraging voluminous natural hair as your strands swell. we should warn you however, big, juicy afros have been known to stop traffic, draw a crowd and cause tidal waves. okay, we’re kidding about the traffic part ;o)
- skip the shampoo
and wash your hair with conditioner! wait…what?!? that’s right, cone-free (silicone) conditioners can be used to cleanse hair gently without stripping hair of its natural oils. the added moisturizing ingredients in your condish will provide an extra boost of moisture to thirsty curls leaving them soft and supple to the touch. our honey hemp conditioner doubles well for use as a conditioner wash or co-wash with its high content of fatty acids, honey and aloe vera gel.
- back away from the flat iron/hot comb/blow dryer
higher temperatures outside means that its the perfect time to air dry your hair and avoid possible heat damage. we know, you always use a protective serum before heat styling, but why spend time inside curling/straightening/blow drying your hair when you can be outside frolicking and soaking up the sun. no heat, also means less time spent with worry and frustration if you go to the beach or the pool. feel free to jump in and have a good time, and when you emerge from the water as a glistening sun goddess with a head full of happy ringlets, you’ll be thrilled you left the left the flat iron under the bathroom sink.
share some of your summer time hair care tips in the comments!
Honey-Hemp Conditioner is a penetrating, detangling, seriously softening multipurpose conditioner, enriched with aloe vera gel, hemp oil, honey, and just a touch of hydrolyzed silk protein. (this is not your high protein rebuilding conditioner; we use just enough to make it silky ;o) HH has got great detangling slip and serious moisturizing power. It rinses cleanly and also makes a nice pre-shampoo deep conditioning treatment. (add oil or extra honey for superior DC power!) It can even be used as a creamy, nourishing leave-in!
HOW TO USE: Slather on. Hum a tune. (To use as a pre-shampoo deep treatment, insert an hour and/or a warm towel here.) Detangle. Rinse Out. Ah yeah.

hi linda! we always suggest starting with the hair ‘snack pack’ – mini versions, great for trying out the goodies! http://www.oyinhandmade.com/minis/snack.html
Hi- I have long curly kinky dark hair (not African American). My hair is so curly that it is starting to knot in dreads (don’t want) -
Do you have have any hair products you might recommend?
Thanks!
hi leslie, if your hair is tangling and knotting b/c it’s dry, a softening moisture product like the juices (our lightest weight moisturizer, an herbal tonic) or the hair dew (creamier leave-in lotion) might help. you also might try wearing your hair in protective styles (basically anything that keeps the ends tucked in) so that your hair is not as mobile and is less able to tangle. think a braid, a bun, a casual/messy french roll, etc. finally, get a good trim if necessary b/c sometimes hair can tangle more easily when it’s in need of new ends. hope that helps!
I love all Oyin’s product! I want to try the Go Tea spray as a moisturizer and I have a couple of questions. I’ve noticed the bottle is different from the juices is the pump the same or is it more of an aerosol type of spray. Is the smell similar to any of the other products?
~Hello
!! I have been desperately looking for products for my hair, I have been going natural for a year or more now, I started by cutting all my hair off and now I have two-strand twists in and not sure what to use or which direction to go…..suggestions Please**
I am currently living in Arizona. There is very little to no humidity……desert dry!!!!!And since i live in the valley, there is alot of dust in 103-105 weather. My hair is 4b-4c hair. What do you suggest on weekly and daily moisturization in extremely dry weather?
I love love your hair products… Used them for quite a while especially the honey hemp condish, hair dew and pomade.. I had to stop using them because I noticed I was sneezing quite often after using them.. Any plans on making unsecured versions? Also I was very concerned with the optiphen preservative used based on research about the components of the preservative. Ever considered using different preservatives such as potassium sir ate? Thanks oyin
* unscented version …* potassium sorbate
